By demagnetising magnetic carriers, you rearrange the polarity of the metal particles. These allow you to store data. A magnet alternately attracts the particles in a different direction. This is how the computer captures ones and zeros, the binary counterparts of your data.

If you put the carrier (tape or hard disk) in a strong magnetic field, the metal particles are scattered in random directions. This makes all the data, which you had stored, disappear permanently.
